The Queensland Police Service (QPS) has urged drivers to watch for wildlife on roads through Logan and the Scenic Rim.
Police say over the past two months they have noticed an increased number of calls relating to wildlife injured in vehicle collisions on rural roads.
Many Australian animals, such as kangaroos, are much more active around dusk and dawn and the QPS says motorists should take particular care during these time periods.
Both the QPS and the Queensland Government's Department of Environmental Science (DES) recommend 'wildlife-friendly' driving through areas known for being wildlife habitat.
This includes staying alert and avoiding distractions while driving, as well as driving more slowly through these habitat areas to allow both drivers and animals more time to react.
The DES also says the presence of existing roadkill is a strong indicator of wildlife activity, and so extra caution is advised through these 'black spots'.
If you come across injured wildlife do not approach the animal as they can be unpredictable, and contact the RSPCA Wildlife Ambulance on 1300 ANIMAL (1300-264-625).
If the animal is dead, check for any nearby young provided it is safe to do so.
This includes looking inside the pouches of marsupials such as kangaroos and possums, and callers should advise the RSPCA accordingly.
