Another milestone in the creation of a 25 hectare sports and recreation precinct in Greenbank has been reached, with the installation of lighting poles at the new AFL field.
Standing 30m high the poles will light up the 5.5 hectare oval, which is tipped to open in 2023, allowing use of the grounds after dark.
Mirvac General Manager for Residential Development in Queensland, Warwick Bible, said the new oval which was being constructed in design partnership with Logan City Council and AFL Queensland was on track.
"At this stage we have completed all the earthworks, stormwater drainage and the installation of the light towers, which will not only serve as a landmark for the field but also allow players to train at night when the field is complete," Mr Bible said.
"This is the first AFL field for the Greenbank region and it will be competition grade, with a full-sized oval, warm up field and plans in the pipeline for a clubhouse on site.
"As with all aspects of Everleigh, we have thought carefully about maximising the community benefit and ensuring we deliver a first-class facility for locals to enjoy, and have worked closely with Logan City Council, AFL Queensland and local AFL club Park Ridge Pirates, which have each provided invaluable input on the design."
The fields will be irrigated with stormwater collected on-site, and will be lit using LEDs to reduce the environmental impact once it is up and running.
Mirvac is also sponsoring the Park Ridge Pirates, which is offering a free AFL skills program at Everleigh Park.
Deputy Mayor, Division 11 Councillor Natalie Willcocks, said the new facility was key to growing the new community.
"Key infrastructure, such as Everleigh AFL Oval, is needed to assist the development of Greenbank and to support the growing number of people seeking to buy and invest in the region," Cr Willcocks said.
"Community and sporting facilities are also beneficial to the physical and emotional wellbeing of locals, helping to foster a more active and engaged community by creating spaces where people can play, live, and connect."
AFL Queensland Facilities and Government Manager Cobey Moore said the new facility would boost sport participation in Greenbank and the wider Logan area.
"We know that facilities such as this are fantastic in terms of getting children involved in AFL," Mr Moore said.
"Families lead busy lives and having an AFL oval and club house within easy walking or driving distance makes it easy to train, play and compete on a regular basis."
The free AFL skills program happens every Wednesday at 4pm, and for full details or to register head to eventbrite.
