The City Lifestyle Committee was given a taste of things to come at its recent meeting, where they voted to approve the proposed schedule of exhibitions in the Logan Art Gallery for next year.
Local artists featured in the proposed 2023 program include:
- Whakawhanaunatanga by Maori artists and Jimboomba residents Walter and Evangeline Archer, which explores their experiences living and working in Australia.
- Archibald portraits by Woodridge artist Jun Chen, a collection of works accepted into the annual prestigious Archibald Prize exhibition.
- Artwaves 2023, an exhibition of artwork produced by high school students from across Logan.
These will be supplemented by state-wide and national exhibits, including To the Light, an exhibition commissioned by Logan Art Gallery an created by the Hope Vale Art Collective and Interlace, a collection of lace art created by members of the Australasian Contemporary Lacemakers.
The program also includes Curious Nature, a collection of work by the late Robyn Daw.
Lifestyle Committee Chair Councillor Laurie Koranski said she was "thrilled" by the work the council's Libraries and Creative Industries branch had done to prepare the program.
"How marvellous," Cr Koranski said.
"Look at the array of talent that we have across the city, and the variety of exhibits that we have to look forward to."
The exhibitions will be displayed throughout the year at the Logan Art Gallery, which is set to reopen later this year after the building's climate control system is repaired.
Deputy Mayor, Division 11 Councillor Natalie Willcocks said she would like to see the pop-up exhibitions at Logan West Community Centre, which served as a replacement for the main gallery, continue.
"I'm assuming all of this is back in the main gallery," Cr Willcocks said.
"Are we going to continue with the pop-up galleries, because we've loved it out in the west."
The Libraries and Creative Industries manager said there were no fixed plans to continue the pop-up galleries, but it was something the branch would consider as the pop-up galleries had proven popular.
The motion to endorse the proposed Logan Art Gallery exhibition program for the 2023 calendar year was supported unanimously by the committee.
