I've helped many families unpack and set up their new homes and one thing that often prolongs this stage is the way in which things are packed beforehand. So when my family and I recently moved after buying our first home, I made sure to apply all the lessons learned along the way, and I promise it made a huge difference. Here are some of the key learnings which I hope will help make your next move a smooth one too. This is probably the most important stage in the process. I mean, less stuff means less to pack right? It's important to think about the space in your new home and how your current belongings will fit (or not fit). It helps to visualise your life in your new home and think about how you would like it to feel. There's a good chance you don't want it to feel cluttered. Write down a plan outlining specific packing tasks and a timeline to help you keep on track. Once you have your plan, I recommend penciling dedicated time blocks into your calendar so you're building it into your schedule and setting aside the time required to execute, this helps avoid the overwhelm. The general rule of thumb is to use larger boxes for the lightweight items such as glassware and decor, and to use small to medium boxes for heavy items including books and crockery. Not only will this keep boxes intact, but your back will also thank you. Quite often people pack by room, however chances are your new home will have a different configuration - maybe you now have that linen closet you always dreamed of so the under-bed linen storage is no longer needed. Begin packing by category, then room. Start with categories you are certain you can live without, such as books and decor. Attaching labels that clearly identify the room and contents is a must. A black marker on the box isn't always clear for removalists and things can easily end up in the wrong room. Next thing you know, you are desperate for a coffee and your mugs are nowhere to be found. Clearly labelled boxes mean everything ends up in the right place and unpacking is a whole lot easier. If you want to take things one step further, add "this way up" and "fragile" stickers for extra caution.
