The mouth of the Cam River, on the Burnie side, is the hottest piece of land in Burnie, according to its new owner, Errol Stewart. Mr Stewart will take possession of the land following a council agreement to dispose of the site and sell it to JMC Group for development. He said he was approached by Burnie mayor Teeny Brumby shortly after she was elected. "She got to me early and said I should come and have a have a look," he said. "I thought it was a fantastic site to be developed... and, more broadly, the Burnie CBD has a lot of potential to be rejuvenated." Mr Stewart said that environmental impact and coastal values studies would be commissioned immediately and he hopes to present a development application early in 2024. "A hotel would be a good part of this site, but it really needs to be a mixed-use urban development," he said. "In my view... there could potentially be some [plans for] elevated residential accommodation." "It's an exciting time for Burnie because this is the beginning of where we're heading into the future," she said. "This is on an unused site that partners beautifully with Waratah-Wynyard's lovely new playground on the other side of the river." Mr Stewart said significant work would go into understanding what would be needed to protect the colony of Little Penguins. "Obviously there's a penguin colony along here so we need to be really aware of that, but I think it's an attraction that we can work with," he said.
