WELL over a decade into its operation, the Greenbank RSL sub-branch Men's Shed is hosting one of its biannual open days with a range of locally-made leather and wood products on offer.
Whip maker Garry Glasby said some of his work might also be for sale at the event, which will also feature a sausage sizzle for hungry customers.
Men's Shed Coordinator Dom Higgins said the event was key to keeping the shed, which has nearly 50 people use its facilities each week, operational.
"The sub-branch totally funds this," Mr Higgins said.
"The boys, they make the products and things - whatever they come up with and we sell them off to support the sub-branch."
The Men's shed boasts three sections: a woodworking section, a leather working and a photography section and the committee has plans to restart its computer section, which had been unable to operate due to COVID restrictions.
Mr Higgins said anybody was welcome at the Men's Shed, provided they were a member of the Greenbank Services Club or the RSL sub-branch, and encouraged anybody interested in picking up new hobbies to come along to the open day.
"Fellas that are retired and want to learn a little bit of woodwork or a little leather work should come down," he said.
"They'll get taken through it. There's a big group here to help them."
The shed coordinator also said there was no lower age limit on joining.
"It's all depending on people's abilities," Mr Higgins said.
"We can't be watching all the time, but if a bloke retires at 35 why not?
"People come in, they don't have to do anything. They can come here and have a coffee and decide what they want to do later on."
Mr Higgins hoped the open day would attract more members to the Men's Shed, as the committee has plans for future expansion.
Work by Men's Shed members will be on sale at the open day including wooden toys, ornaments and household goods as well as leather items including belts and wallets.
The woodworking of the Men's Shed is open from 6:30am-12pm every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday while the leather workshop is open Wednesday and Friday from approximately 7:30am-12pm.
The photography group meets on Fridays, with excursions and in-house sessions on alternate weeks and for further details call 07 3806 6086.
The Men's Shed open day sale will be held from 7:30am-12pm on Saturday June 25, at 3/15 Corporate Place Hillcrest.
