Munruben Muay Thai fighter Kim Townsend continued her 2022 winning streak and made history when she claimed the World Boxing Council's World Flyweight title on the weekend.
Just over a month has passed since she won the WBC World Light Flyweight title, and now Townsend is the first person in WBC Muay Thai history to simultaneously hold two titles in different weight classes.
British fighter Lisa Brierley had originally challenged Townsend for the Light Flyweight title, but later requested to change weight classes and then arranged to fight another opponent.
After this second opponent withdrew, Townsend was given permission to compete and hold titles in both weight classes.
This only gave her a week to properly prepare for the fight, but Townsend said she was confident heading into the ring despite the pressure.
"I knew I could beat her," she said.
"There was just a bit of extra pressure, I'd just won one title and I was about to be the first in the world to hold a second one simultaneously."
Townsend won the fight by unanimous points decision and said her opponent was the first southpaw she'd met in the ring but her trainer, also a southpaw, had "shown her a few tricks".
"I've never fought a southpaw before," Townsend said.
"There were a few moments where I thought 'that's a bit different', but we'd trained for it because we knew what was coming."
Trainer Chris Johnstone said the allure of both belts was drawing competitors from far and wide, but no further fights had been formally confirmed.
"Everyone is chasing us so quick, these belts are hot property," Mr Johnstone said.
"Now we're hoping for twice as many fights. We've already had interest from promoters in the UK, the USA and Japan."
Mr Johnstone said they were looking forward to further bouts as Townsend defends her titles, particularly as her foreign-trained opponents still underestimate her.
"After the fights everybody keeps saying they're surprised by how strong I am," Townsend said.
"They think it'll be an easy fight because they train in Thailand and we're just in a shed in Munruben," Mr Johnstone said.
