AFL star Dane Swan will finally play for the Park Ridge Pirates in a match against the Jindalee Jags on Saturday March 26, after the game scheduled for June last year was postponed in definitely.
President of the Park Ridge Pirates, Andy Colenso, said the club had worked hard to secure Swan's attendance and the player had graciously agreed to postpone the match following a COVID outbreak in Victoria.
"We spoke to Ricky Nixon, who used to manage him, and heard Dane was making a few appearances in games around the country," Mr Colenso said.
"We negotiated from there and he was happy to confirm his appearance at a later date, because COVID meant we couldn't get him up here.
"I just hope the weather gods smile on us."
Mr Colenso said the event would have something for everyone both on and off the pitch, even those on the Jindalee team who have to play against the former Collingwood player.
"It's not often you have a Brownlow Medallist and former premiership player come to Park Ridge, I think this will be good for the community," he said.
"I'm sure the Jindalee team are looking forward to the challenge as well, they'll get to play against someone they idolise and see first hand what it takes to play at his level."
The event will also feature food trucks, live music and a merchandise store, and residents will have the opportunity to get an autograph from Dane.
Mr Colenso said he hoped to see a sizeable crowd at the event, as the club had big plans for next year.
"We're pretty excited, and we hope we get a lot of people to come along," he said.
"We hope it's a success because we're looking forward to approaching more players for the event next year."
The event will take place at Park Ridge State High School on Saturday March 26. The Reserve grade teams will play at 11:45am, followed by the Seniors at 2pm.
