Financial support for flood-affected areas as waters recede

The Logan River between Waterford and Parklands is expected to peak today, above the 2017 level of 10.5 metres.

Based on the 2017 flood it is estimated around 200 homes will be significantly impacted.

Floodwaters at Maclean Bridge peaked overnight at 20.64 metres, which was below the 2017 peak of 20.66 metres but a major flood warning remains in place.

The Mayor encouraged the community to remain vigilant as significant dangers remain, even after the floodwaters subside.

"Now is not the time to be complacent as we still have a long way to go," Councillor Power said.

"We've got around 200 roads across the city that are either closed or affected by floodwater. Some will be closed for days as water recedes and Council engineers can conduct safety inspections."

Flagstone, Jimboomba and Logan Reserve remain cut-off, as do some smaller areas of other suburbs.

The evacuation centre at Logan Metro Sports & Events Centre in Crestmead remains open, and assisted 19 people overnight.

Temporary places of refuge are currently operating between the hours of 7 am and 5pm at Cornubia Sports Centre in Cornubia and Logan West Community Centre in Hillcrest.

The State Government has announced that residents in flood-affected areas, including Logan, can apply for financial assistance grants and support services jointly funded by the State and Federal Governments.

Eligible applicants for the Emergency Hardship Assistance Grant may receive $180 per person, up to a total of $900 for a family of five or more.

This grant is not income or asset tested, and applicants must be able to prove they are unable to meet their immediate essential needs for food, clothing, medical supplies or temporary accommodation.

Minister for Communities and Housing Leeanne Enoch said the government was working with local authorities to assist residents.

"There have been many properties and businesses across the south-east inundated by floodwaters and people are still isolated from their homes," Ms Enoch said.

"Thousands more Queenslanders are beginning the arduous task of cleaning up their homes and businesses.

"We are continuing to make grants and supports available to the people who need it as we receive requests from local authorities for assistance."

Other grants, such as the Essential Household Contents Grant, Structural Assistance Grant and Essential Services Safety and Reconnection Grant are also available, however these are means tested and residents must prove eligibility.
