FORMER Brisbane Broncos star and Queensland Origin player Matt Gillett has handed down tips and tricks to the next generation during a clinic at Flagstone State Community College.
Students got to rub shoulders with the former enforcer, who played more than 200 games for the Broncos and featured in the side's 2015 grand final loss to the North Queensland Cowboys.
Gillett and league coach Wayne Weeks visited the school as part of a Broncos clinic on Wednesday which was held to get people active.
Grade 10 student Tahlia Croker said the Broncos enjoyed their time at Flagstone and could not wait to return in 2022.
"This special event was held to get everyone involved with sport," she said.
"The year 11s also raised money for their end of the year formal in 2022 by holding a sausage sizzle."
Gillett was advised by medical experts to retire from contact sport after suffering a severe shoulder injury in 2019.
He was told surgery was not an option and he would put himself at risk of further injury and long term consequences if he continued playing.
An emotional Gillett told reporters in 2019 it was hard to walk away from the game but said he had to do what was right for him and his family.
"I have been part of a great club here at Brisbane Broncos throughout my whole career," he said.
"I played for my state, for my country and in doing so played with some legends of the game.
"While today is very hard for me, I can look back over my career and be thankful for what I've been able to achieve and the friends I've made throughout my journey."
Gillett, now 33, played 20 State of Origin games for Queensland and 12 internationals for the Australian Kangaroos.
