THE Logan District Road Policing Unit, which operates in the Scenic Rim. and the Main Roads representatives were at Canungra on Sunday to engage with the motorcycle community following a terrible increase in motorcycle fatalities and injury crashes this year.
Beaudesert police officer in charge Ken Murray said there had been an increase in the number of people riding motorbikes across the Scenic Rim.
"We have seen a considerable increase in the number of motorcyclists wanting to take the time to enjoy a ride out to Rathdowney and Boonah," he said.
"A recent crash at Beaudesert saw a youth suffer quite severe injuries. The driver of the other vehicle did not see him.
"It can be difficult at times to see a motorcycle so it's more important for drivers to always check when changing lanes, turning or moving through intersections."
"The crashes we have seen, some of them have resulted in quite severe injuries."
Logan District Road Policing Unit officer in charge Darren Smith said Logan had already seen a number of deaths on the roads.
"So far this year, the Logan Police District has had three motorcyclists killed and a total of six lives lost as result of traffic crashes," he said.
"We need our motorcycle community to be aware of their vulnerability and susceptibility to significant injuries or even death in the event of a traffic crash.
"Engaging with the public in a social way provides us an opportunity to speak with the broader community directly and reinforce road safety messaging."
Police said they would continue to work with TMR to develop and apply a variety or enforcement and engagement activities across the Logan and Scenic Rim council areas to address the concerning increase in motorcycle crashes and traffic crashes generally.
Senior Sergeant Smith said driver behaviour, inattention and the Fatal Five offences of drink and drug driving, speeding, failing to wear seatbelts, distraction and fatigue would continue to be the focus of police.
