A HEALTHY street environment integrating cyclists and pedestrians is part of a council plan to upgrade Logan Hospital's surrounds at Meadowbrook, which begins later this year.
Council plans to develop the suburb into a health, wellbeing and education precinct with the work which is scheduled to finish mid next year.
Upgrades include signals at a pedestrian crossing between Logan Hospital and Meadowbrook Shopping Centre, across Loganlea Road.
Loganlea Road will be upgraded from four lanes to six, while three metre wide shared paths at Loganlea Train Station will be suitable for pedestrians and cyclists.
Additional safety cameras, upgraded lighting, public artwork, seating and shade structures are also part of the plan.
The work was identified as a priority project from from the council-hosted Meadowbrook Summit in September 2018.
The Meadowbrook Implementation Fund will contribute $5 million towards the project.
Grants will also come from the state government under the Unite and Recover program.
City Planning, Economic Development and Environment chair, deputy mayor Jon Raven, said the upgrade of the precinct around Logan Hospital was one of several significant projects council will undertake this year.
"These upgrades will not only make it easier for people to access health services in Meadowbrook, they will also help attract more investment in the area which will deliver more services and more jobs," Cr Raven said.
Council's works in the area coincide with the $460 million expansion of Logan Hospital, which is well underway.
Several other health-related development projects in Meadowbrook have also been approved or proposed.
They include a $30 million four-storey medical specialist centre and day hospital in Nestor Drive, which is within walking distance of Logan Hospital, Logan Heart Centre and Loganlea station.
There are also plans for a private hospital and specialist hub on a site across the road from the public hospital.
A $20 million multi-level medical precinct on Logandowns Drive will house medical and allied health operators, medical imaging services, professionals and specialists
