WELCOME to a bright and shiny start to 2021. Around this time of year everyone is excited about the year ahead. Your council is no different.
Under mayor Darren Power's leadership, 2020 was focused on upskilling your councillors, building a united team, concentrating on what is best for our city and putting the needs of our residents first.
Work on the budget began in earnest with the acting City Governance chair, Natalie Willcocks, asking councillors to think about what kind of budget we want to deliver this year.
Will it be a no frills cut and save budget? Or should we borrow money like the state and federal governments to boost local employment, kickstart the economy and deliver infrastructure that we know you've been waiting for?
Logan has been doing the heavy lifting when it comes to residential development in south-east Queensland
- Jon Raven
These are some of the most important decisions councillors make on your behalf each year and Cr Willcocks tasked councillors with contemplating the budget over the Christmas break.
Our city's growth is both a challenge and an opportunity. Logan has been doing the heavy lifting when it comes to residential development in south-east Queensland, and we are now ahead of the curve when it comes to our housing targets.
This means we can make changes to our planning scheme to protect the rural residential lifestyle so many people love whilst focusing future growth near transport corridors, Yarrabilba and greater Flagstone.
Major council projects are on target to be completed this year, including the revamped Kingston Butter Factory, Logan Village Green enhancements, the York in Beenleigh and vibrant new branding to complement the next exciting chapter in our city's history.
These projects have all been a long time coming and support the massive private investment we have secured for Logan in the last year while neighbouring cities have struggled to find investment and create jobs throughout the pandemic.
Protecting our natural environment is a key priority for your council. We will continue to proactively acquire our top 100 strategic conservation properties using funds from the environment levy. We are committed to installing more solar power on council assets which not only saves money but brings us closer to being carbon neutral by 2022.
Your council is focused on creating local jobs, improving community facilities and enhancing our natural environment. This year we'll need your ideas, your feedback and your passion to build a Logan we can all be proud of. Are you up for the challenge?
