It's official - Logan's Ekka public holiday has been changed to Friday, August 14.
The state government has approved a request to change the holiday to align with Brisbane's.
Mayor Darren Power said the government was encouraging the community to take advantage of the long weekend to support local businesses, and would formally make the change through parliament when it sits next week.
"It makes sense to have our public holiday on the same day as Brisbane residents," he said.
"Many Logan residents work or attend school in Brisbane, and Brisbane residents also work and go to school here in Logan, so it makes it easier for everyone to spend much-needed time together.
"I encourage people to make the most of the eased travel restrictions and support Queensland businesses after the COVID-19 pandemic and bushfires caused so much disruption.
"Our Visit Logan website also has some great ideas if you want to stay closer to home."
Council wrote to the government last month, asking for the change to be made.
In announcing the news at May's council meeting, Cr Power said it was a hot topic on social media.
"The main reason people why wanted to change the date was because people work in Brisbane and they had a different holiday to their children schooling in Logan," Cr Power said at the time.
Cr Power said councillors were unanimous in their support of consulting the community on the date change.
"During the process that was on Facebook, there was a lot of consultation that took place," he said.
"In fact it was probably the most well read social media event that occurred, certainly on my Facebook."
An online poll conducted by the Jimboomba Times revealed that 51 per cent were in favour of changing to the Friday, while 48 per cent would rather see the holiday kept on the Monday.
The Redlands' holiday has remained in its usual Monday slot, as has Scenic Rim Council's.
