SPORTSBET has opened a market allowing punters to bet on what item Woolworths will apply a purchase limit to next as coronavirus panic buying grips the nation.
It comes as local shop keepers start taking the mickey out of the madness of shoppers buying reams of toilet paper.
Darryl Pattemore of Pattemore's Meats at Alexandra Hills is making sure his customers have all aspects of their digestions covered with the gift of a roll of toilet paper with every $20 spent.
Mr Pattemore engaged emcee Tony Morrison to create a short Facebook video which drew more than 14,000 views in 24 hours and culminated in more than 1000 toilet paper rolls being distributed.
"We identified the crisis with our customers and wanted to do our bit. You can't even buy this at the supermarket. We are watching lots of people walk away disappointed," Mr Pattemore said.
Another Cleveland store offered its own bit of humour, with a roll displayed at its front window, carrying a hefty $100 price tag.
The Sportsbet book has hand sanitiser the favourite at the short odds of $1.20, hand soap is $1.95 and eggs $2.50.
The outsider is Tim-Tams at $21, while there is good value for tomato sauce at $15 and Vegemite at $12.
The market opened just days after Woolworths applied a purchase limit to toilet paper to stop customers from raiding supermarket shelves.
Sportsbet spokesman Rich Hummerston said the rise in toilet paper sales was unexpected and had prompted them to open the market.
"Next we'll be seeing rolls being auctioned on eBay, but we're tipping there will be more product limits ahead,'' he said.
A Woolworths spokesperson said the purchase limit was put in place to shore up stock as suppliers increased production.
"Our teams are continuing to work hard on restocking stores with extra deliveries of long-life food and household staples from our distribution centres," the spokesperson said.
"The vast majority of the products ranged in our stores remain available for our customers as normal."
