LOGAN mayoral candidate Paul Taylor has vowed to crack down on expensive "junket trips" for all elected council members if he wins the 2020 election.
This comes after Logan City Council administrator Tamara O'Shea slashed the international travel budget to $38,520 for 2019-2020, down from the $157,000 budgeted for 2018-2019.
The funding cut was made possible due to the dismissal of Mayor Luke Smith and the 12 councillors in May this year.
Mr Taylor said it was important for any overseas trips to pass the "pub test".
"I understand that on some occasions travel for meetings and research is required..." he said.
"The case will have to stack up, if not be compelling to warrant a trip overseas, irrespective of budgetary provisions.
"Ratepayers will be notified in advance of any intended overseas travel schedule and the reasons that warrant it.
"Our elected representatives must respect ratepayers at all times and just because a council credit card is issued, it is not a license to splurge the funds. That is unacceptable."
Mr Taylor did not specify say how much would be spent on overseas travel if elected.
He said the use of technology such as Skype and other video conferencing software should be used to keep travel expenses kept to a minimum.
Mr Taylor announced his campaign at a Logan Ratepayers Association meeting on October 7.
He was a Senate candidate for Fraser Anning's Conservative National Party at the 2019 federal election, but has since quit the party to run as an independent.
