GREENBANK swimming sensation Mollie O’Callaghan continued a golden streak of good form at the Queensland State Swimming Championship in December.
The 14-year-old champion achieved personal best times in all of her events and took home three gold medals, one silver medal and two bronze medals from the state titles held between December 15 and 21 at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre, Chandler.
O’Callaghan was the youngest competitor in the women’s open 100m backstroke, which she won with a time of 102.81 seconds.
She outperformed this time when she competed and won in her age group for the under 14 100m backstroke in 102.34 seconds.
O’Callaghan also won gold in under 14 200m backstroke, silver in 100m freestyle and bronze for under 14 200m free style and 400m freestyle.
Waterworx Aquatic Centre swimming coach Paul Sansby said O’Callaghan was a role model for club members aspiring to improve.
“We are really proud of what Mollie does...it is good when you have a youngster doing what (she does) because the other kids can see what they need to aim up to,” he said.
“She trains nine to 10 times a week and does three gym sessions a week. She would spend about 17-18 hours a week in the water. She is a very committed individual.”
In November, she took out age and overall champion at the Queensland Open Water Championship.
O’Callaghan has taken a small break from swimming over the New Year’s holidays and will resume swimming on Wednesday, January 9.
Coach Sansby said O’Callaghan’s main focus in 2019 would be preparation for the Open Nationals, World Championship and National Age Titles in April.
