LOGAN’S Pacific Island communities gathered in celebrations of faith, culture and competition yesterday.
Thousands turned out to compete and watch the fifth annual Challenge of the Nations netball competition at Logan Netball Association. Maori, indigenous and Pacific Island women from 10 nations are competing over five age groups in two divisions.
The competition opened with speeches, culture and a colourful parade of athletes on show.
Logan Art Gallery’s Maori Culture Day was a family day staged in collaboration with the exhibition He kakana Ahau – I am a seed.
Local elders gave a Karanga – ceremonial call – to visitors and their families ahead of speeches and Waiata – ceremonial songs.

I am a seed features the work of artists Tania Hapai Heta, Allen Vili, Mihimai Nikora, Merri Randell, Whaia Whaea and Teraimana Tahiataa and a cloak of stars woven by women and children from across Logan as part of a community weave project that was led by Leona Morete. Family day highlights included performances, a weapons display and fashion parade.

At nearby Logan Police Citizens Youth Club, members of the Samoan community gathered to celebrate its cultural program graduation run by the Voice of Samoan People Inc. Graduates and elders gathered to celebrate through faith, song and food with sermon, prayers and song.
