COLES customers can help drought affected families by donating money to the Country Women’s Association when paying for groceries.
A Coles spokesperson said the money would be used to help families pay for water, electricity, household, food, medical and school expenses.
Customers are able to make donations of any amount, including $2, $5 and $10, at any Coles checkout across Australia.
Coles Managing Director John Durkan said Coles stores in drought-affected areas were collecting donations of gift cards and non-perishable foods.
The nation-wide fundraising appeal was launched to help out more.
“Many of our team members at stores in drought affected communities have heard harrowing stories from customers about the impact of the drought,” he said.
“… We wanted to take action at a national level to help more families facing hardship right now and to help farmers to combat drought in the future.”
A Coles spokesperson said the retail giant was also offering $5 million in grants and interest free loans from the Coles Nuture Fund for farmers who have a project which will help them to combat drought in the future.
Coles also continued to support its grass fed beef suppliers by buying livestock fed grain during the drought, the spokesperson said.
