RUBY Jo Turner, the Emmaus College school student who impressed on last year’s season of Channel 9’s TV talent The Voice, says she’s almost ready to head into the recording studio.
Turner, 17, has a new single called Oh Oh Why. She wrote it herself – and she could not be prouder of what she’s accomplished.
“I wrote some songs before The Voice, but nothing like this. I’m proud of it – I really am,” she said.
“You don’t know how long it’s taken to get myself to a place where I can stand up and say something like that about myself.”
The song is not quite ready to perform at the Logan Live gig Turner plays tonight at Thom & Ann’s Restaurant Deli, Yarrabilba.
“It still needs a little work,” she said.
“I don’t want to put it out there until I have it absolutely right.”
Turner says her journey from Chambers Flat teen to contestant in the national spotlight as part of Team Seal and home again has been an emotional rollercoaster.
“Initially, it was kind of hard coming back and being home,” she said.
“I had no trouble getting the gigs, but it was a bit tough, having been in front of those big audiences and bright lights to come back and, so to speak, sing for myself for a bit.
“It took a little while, but I have found my way.”
Turner, midway through her final year at school, is enjoying all the milestones 17-year-olds enjoy. This year, she has performed in her high school musical and attended her school formal. She still has graduation and getting her driver’s licence too look forward to.
As to what the future holds, she’s still deciding.
“What’s the dream?” she mused.
“You know … it changes all the time.
“When school is done I want to take a year and spend it gigging as much as possible. I need to work out if music really is the thing I want to put my heart and soul into.
“I love performing but it’s a tough, tough industry and I have to prepare myself for what might lie ahead.
“I’m investigating courses – Bachelor of Pop Music and Bachelor of Music Technology – but first I need to make sure it’s what I want to do.”
Turner is one of dozens of local musicians who have been performing for Logan Live music month through July. More than 70 gigs will be played in the city by month’s end.
