This month, the Cancer Council Queensland and Heart Foundation launched an Everyday Health Survey on sugar-sweetened beverages, aiming to identify consumer habits, determine understanding of the health impacts of sugary drinks and assess support for proposed regulations to reduce consumption of these products.
The findings will enable organisations to develop new campaigns and advocate for regulations that will positively impact the health of Queenslanders.
Sugar-sweetened beverages are a major source of sugar in the Australian diet. We know these beverages have little or no nutritional value, provide excess energy and lead to weight gain.
Although many factors influence obesity, research indicates sugary drinks play a significant role.
It’s our priority to combat a weighty issue and advocate for change that includes marketing restrictions and a 20 per cent levy on sugary drinks. If you live in Queensland and are 18 and over, have your say. Complete the survey at www.cancerqld.org.au/everydayhealthsurvey by July 31.

SPEED CAMERAS
THANKS to those point-to-point cameras. People are now afraid to drive at the speed limit and many drive even slower, which condenses the traffic into massive unbroken convoys. This can make it near impossible to turn onto the highway at intersections without traffic lights. People get impatient and pull out. More smashes take place. Speed cameras don’t save lives. They’re the anti-prize you get in the mail after you’ve sped passed one.

TRAVELLING along the road I watch my Speedo which does detract from paying full attention to the trafffic. I find people slow down the cmaers but stay above the limit afterwards and turn off before the second point. That’s not really a deterrent.

MT LINDESAY HIGHWAY
THIS road will quickly go from third worst in the state to nightmare with the development going on in Jimboomba. The ALP has ignored us for two decades. Time to lose the albatross.
