JIMBOOMBA motorists have failed to stick to speed limits in school zones for the first day of term three.
At least 17 speeding tickets were issued in Jimboomba district school zones on Monday, according to Jimboomba police station officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Peter Waugh.
This comes as Queensland’s peak motoring body revealed 11,885 drivers were caught speeding in school zones in just one year.
RACQ spokesperson Lucinda Ross said 3200 people were caught speeding more than 13 km/h over the speed limit in the South Eastern Police region at Queensland school zones between October 31 2016 and November 1 2017.
“It’s frustrating so many people are willing to risk the lives of our most vulnerable. There’s no excuse for speeding through a school zone,” she said.
“Even if you take your eyes off the road for just two seconds, a car moving at 40km/h travels more than 22 metres.
“Speeding will not only earn you a fine, but it can have catastrophic consequences – drivers need to be extra vigilant, especially during pick up and drop off times.”
The Department of Main Roads and Transport has been contacted to provide updated school zone speeding figures.
