PETROL prices have reached a cheap phase in the the price cycle, but some south east service stations continue to punish drivers with high prices, the state’s peak motoring body, the RACQ, reveals.
RACQ spokesperson Renee Smith said while almost 40 percent of the market now charged 145 cents per litre or less for unleaded fuel, more than five percent ripped drivers off.
“To have a number of servos still charging more than 155 cpl is frustrating to say the least – but the good news is there’s plenty of cheaper fuel around,” Ms Smith said.
“We’re urging drivers to head to these cheaper retailers because we don’t know how long the prices will stay low for. Motorists should aim for 145 cpl or less so they know they’re getting a good deal.”
Drivers are paying an average 144.1 cpl on the Gold Coast, 145.5 cpl in Ipswich, 146.2 cpl in Moreton Bay, 146.5 cpl in Brisbane and 149.9.cpl on the Sunshine Coast.
Ms Smith said global oil prices had impacted the purse strings of local drivers in recent months.
“We’ve seen the global oil price climb to the highest levels since October 2014 which is frustrating for Brisbane motorists who already pay more for fuel than drivers in all of Australia’s other large capital cities,” Ms Smith said.
“The Brisbane ULP average for May increased by almost 5cpl when compared to April and diesel prices rose by more than 9cpl. It’s frustrating, but also reinforces the need for drivers to shop around for the cheaper deals that are available.”
