RECKLESS motorists are deliberately tampering with their own vehicles to make it easier to hoon in south-west Logan suburbs.
And the Queensland Police Service are using Polair helicopter resources to crack down on this “stupid” behaviour.
Jimboomba police station officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Peter Waugh said those engaging in risky behaviour road behaviour needed to consider the consequences of their actions.
“People are disconnecting the rear brakes of their car so that they can hoon,” he said.
“It is very dangerous to drive defective motor vehicles. If you crash you can be charged with serious offences.
“Your vehicle will also no longer be insured if you are involved in an accident.”
Police have caught hoons in areas including Greenbank, New Beith and Waterford Tamborine Road at Logan Village.
Senior Sergeant Waugh said disconnecting the rear brakes of a car was a serious safety hazard.
“You are severely compromising the stopping distance of your car and not only risking your life, but the life of other people,” he said.
“This is an increasing trend throughout west Logan and the broader Logan District.”
People can report reckless drivers by calling the Hoon Hotline 13 4666.
