WHEN Brent Galpin pays his respects to the Anzacs at Camp Baird in the Middle East this year, he will be surrounded by people who dedicated their lives to Australia.
The Jimboomba Woods man has served in the Australian Defence Force as a medical administrator for the past six months and is due to return home in two weeks.
Mr Galpin said April 25 was a day to respect and remember people who fought and died to protect their country.
“It is important for me, it is a time to reflect on the contribution made by past and present personnel who have sacrificed and dedicated their life to service,” he said.
“It is also about honouring the original Anzacs in 1915.”
Mr Galpin was inspired to join the military seven years ago following his Navy-serving grandfather’s death.
He said it was rewarding to work in an area where values of respect, professionalism and loyalty flourished.
“My contribution helps support everyone here to do their jobs … I take care of medical administration for the entire health facility here,” he said.
“I have been on a couple of exercises and have seen the guys work together to get the job done. Everyone supports each other and it is a good environment to work in.”
One of Mr Galpin’s most memorable moments was sitting in the passenger seat of an aircraft deploying parachute cargo.
“It was kind of a one-off experience,” he said.
For people aspiring to serve Australia in the future, Mr Galpins said it was important to do it for the right reasons.
“Positions don’t necessarily have a lot of action, it depends on you and what you want. There is a lot of variety and versatility in the air force,” he said.
“You definitely need to be a team player – there are a lot of elements involved in the defence service and people need to pick each other up and be reliable.”
