COMMUNITY and rural life go hand in hand. You can’t have one without the other.
The isolation that plagues the great open expanses called stations is a good enough reason to attend and engage in any and all sports days, celebrations and festivals.
The opportunity to meet up with people sharing common goals is central. Privacy and personal space fall to the wayside here and everyone functions like a big family.
These events have become a staple to living out in the country and the community spirit they foster is what is necessary to sustain good spirits and enthusiasm inside everyone.
I read somewhere that ‘there’s nothing constant about farming except the farmers desire to produce’. If this is the definition of farming then community is the glue that holds it all together.
Finding that connection into rural life and the land is an integral part of the journey. While the elements are hard to bear you won’t find a more proud person than a farmer. Their endurance and optimism are their life-lines. Rural farmers and their land are a far cry from our comfortable semi-rural properties where we have the best of both worlds on our doorstep. While we complain about the long trip to our day jobs don’t forget to spare a thought for our farming families. For a lot of them a trip to the nearest shop means covering a lot more mileage than we certainly do.
