THE first day back to school has sparked a warning from Queensland Police.
Assistant Police Commissioner Mike Keating said police would be on the lookout for motorists failing to follow road rules at school zones.
“Queensland motorists should expect police to be out in force in school zones throughout this week targeting drivers and riders who are putting others at risk near schools.
“Police will also be enforcing important road rules such as stopping at childrens’ crossings and giving way to pedestrians.
“I encourage everyone to be patient in and around school zones, pay attention to the changed speed zones and allow extra travel time on journeys which incorporate these areas where there will be extra traffic.”
Police issued 17,110 school zone speeding tickets between January and September last year across Queensland.
Jimboomba Police officer-in-charge senior sergeant Peter Waugh echoed Mr Keatings concerns.
“We will have a combination of marked and non-marked vehicles, especially during pick-up and drop off times,” he said.
“We will also police the no-standing zones around school because they are dangerous.”
The standard operating times for most school zones in Queensland is 7–9am and 2–4pm.
