All goals are precious to strikers.
But one goal invariably seems to be more special than the others - their first at senior level.
It assumes even more lustre when they are still waiting to score it.
Daniel Arzani, Melbourne City's exciting young forward, has been scoring for every team at every level of the game that he has been involved in.
Bar one.
The teenager, who has made such a big impression since getting his chance in the past month following Tim Cahill's departure from City, has yet to break his duck in the A-League.
Assuming he gets a start, or even comes off the bench, he is hoping to get that first goal monkey off his back on Sunday, when a newly resurgent City host Adelaide United in a game which kicks off at 7pm at AAMI Park.
Arzani certainly sparked up City when he inspired them to a come-from-behind win over Wellington on January 6 after coming off the bench in the second half, setting up front man Ross McCormack for two goals.
He then played his part in a 2-0 win over Glory in Perth, winning the penalty and the free kick which McCormack converted. Five days later he worked hard for 50 minutes before being substituted in City's 2-2 draw with Central Coast, a result achieved with the Sky Blues playing with 10 men for an hour following the dismissal of centre back Harrison Delbridge.
"I would love to get a goal, but at the moment I am really happy to be given a chance in the starting XI and also because the team is going well," the just-turned-19-year-old says.
"We have taken seven points out of nine in the last three games, and getting a draw up in Gosford was good for morale as we knew we were going to be in for a tough time when we had that early sending off.
"But I feel we controlled a lot of that game and deserved to get what we did."
He acknowledges that waiting for the first goal is nerve-wracking but says it doesn't affect his approach to the game.
"It's just a mental thing. You have to play your game, be patient, and then it's a matter of taking the chance. When the first one goes in hopefully plenty more will follow," he said.
Arzani is one of a number of talented youngsters at City who are either breaking into the starting line up or are on the point of doing so.
He might have had his chance earlier but for international call ups with the Australian under-23 and under-20 squads which meant that he didn't get the chance to train with the first team squad and prove himself worthy of a start before late December.
"We have a really strong youth set up and good young players, and all of us are just hoping to get the chance to show what we can do," he says.
