Jason Day will finish 2017 out of the Professional Golf Association (PGA) top ten after what has been a disappointing season on the greens for the former world number one.
The former Hills International College student looked set to win the Australian Open late last month before a final round fade-out saw him finish with a two over par final round to lose to young gun Cameron Davis.
Day finished his first tournament on home soil in four years with a fifth place 8 under par.
Day’s tournament was primarily brought undone on the final day’s play, on the par four ninth, when he ended up with a double bogey after his ball caught the lip of a bunker before bouncing into the water.
Davis won the tournament with a score of -11 under.
Beaudesert born Day’s disastrous final round coming on the back of an emotional year in which his mother Dening was diagnosed with lung cancer and he let long time coach Col Swatton go from his caddie duties in the middle of what was his first winless year since 2013.
Day’s mother’s latest scans have been clear in encouraging news for the golfer’s family.
Day is currently ranked the 12th best golfer in the world with American Dustin Johnson occupying the coveted world number one spot at present.
Though 2017 has resulted in Day sliding out of the top ten PGA ranking he remains the top ranked Australian on the PGA tour with countryman Marc Leishman nipping at his heels in 13th.
Australian Adam Scott is the current world number 31 while world number one Johnson has Jason Day rival and fellow American Jordan Spieth behind him at world number 2.
