MOTORING body RACQ says the Mount Lindesay Highway and passenger rail for the western part of Logan and Scenic Rim should be election priorities.
RACQ’s head of public policy Rebecca Michael said parties should prioritise road safety by committing to invest in upgrades.
The body named the Mount Lindesay and Cunningham highways as priority projects.
“Not only have we already lost 46 lives on southern Queensland roads this year, hundreds of people have been seriously injured. This is why we must see all parties commit to investing in safety upgrades ahead of the election,” Dr Michael said.
“Improvements including road widening and wide centreline treatments, the installation of safety barriers and rumble strips, additional overtaking lanes and removal of roadside hazards would significantly reduce the crash risk.”
Dr Michael said parties also needed to consider infrastructure that offered a viable alternative to road travel.
“A rail corridor between Salisbury to Beaudesert needs to be investigated, including passenger rail to Flagstone,” she said.
“From a business moving freight, to a family heading out on a weekend, southern Queenslanders should have options when it comes to how they move about the region.”
Dr Michael said political parties needed to prove they were planning for the future.
“Queensland can only thrive if the right investment is put into road and transport infrastructure.”
