Opal by Living Gems residents have come together strongly in support of the Jimboomba Relay For Life, to be held on October 7-8.
Nola Green, Cheryl Hitchin and Desiley Bell have quickly grown the team to 45 people and have already banked more than $1000 to its online account.
There will be more funds to come. A car boot sale at Opal on the weekend raised $345 for the cause and Living Gems will sponsor the team for another $1000.
Nola, Cheryl and Desiley were inspired by a recent Biggest Morning Tea event to take on their own fundraising initiative, and Relay for Life, was perfect.
This advertising feature is sponsored by the following business:
“There are a lot of people even in the resort who have been touched by cancer personally family and friends,” Nola said. “It is a terrible disease.”
“Just like so many others, I have had many family and friends that have battled cancer and wanted to do something for them.”
She said the response has been amazing not only from the residents, but also from Opal by Living Gems management.
The team will to get into the spirit of the event by dressing up in wigs and tutus and other costumes, while Living Gems will supply the team with caps, a marquee, banner and a bus for transport. Included is the group is one 80-plus resident, Gladys Ryan, who will be defying her age to do a few laps of the track at the fun and moving event.
Teams complete a walking relay around a set course for 18 hours – from 3pm to 9am - with several poignant and symbolic marks of respect to sufferers, survivors, and those who have passed away and the families left behind.
