Sammy Pearce, 9, will treat himself to his first shaving in front of his friends, family and primary school peers next week, when the Veresdale Scrub State School student participates in the faculty’s World's Greatest Shave event.
Sammy said he was eager to show his support for his nine-year-old friend, Summer Hews, when heard another friend was doing the same.
His sister, Daisy, has also been doing her bit by selling wrist bands and said she would like to colour her hair at the event next year.
“I have known Summer all my life and I just feel sad for her,” Sammy said.
“She’s a nice girl and I can only imagine what her journey has been like over the past few months, and I just keep trying to think about being in her shoes.”
With the help of mum Petra Tarnhamn, Sammy and Daisy have sold $8,000 worth of wrist bands since November.
Mrs Tarnhamn said every cent raised goes towards Summer and her family.
“Knowing what she is going through and hearing about the treatments she has to have when she’s sick just makes you feel so helpless,” she said.
“It’s just not fair seeing a little child go through something like this and since her mum isn’t working at the moment, the family relies on one income.
“We just wanted to help and this was the best way we could.”
Mrs Tarnhamn said Sammy and Daisy will continue selling wristbands at the Jimboomba Country Markets on March 18, the day after the World’s Greatest Shave event at Veresdale Scrub State School.
“We’re really just trying to make life easier for Summer and her family,” she said.
“Hopefully, if we can raise enough money, we can send them to visit their family in Sweden when Summer’s well.”
