Stockleigh’s Barry Townsend has become a published author this month, with the release of his first book.
Werna Creek is an Australian outback fiction novel, with a hint of romance and drama.
The story is set at the end of Queensland’s worst drought on a 80,000 acre beef cattle property.
Mr Townsend drew inspiration from life experiences and real events, as he worked on the property during his jackarooing days.
“I’d thought about writing a book for years,” he said.
“So it was probably in the ideas phase for about 10 years, then a year to write and a year to publish.
“I tied in all these life experiences which I think makes it more credible to the readers.”
The writing experience had been quite a journey for Mr Townsend, but he succeeded with with help of his wife, and first critic, Debra.
“I was writing because I enjoyed it,” he said.
“The best part would have to have been when I was 75 per cent through and could determine the ending.”
Mr Townsend said he had had many positive responses from the first readers of the book.
“It’s not meant to be a macho, manly book because there is that romance side, plus it has that adventure and mystery,” he said.
“I think anyone with a general love for the outback will enjoy reading it.”
Mr Townsend is now working on the second manuscript, Where the Penny Falls, which will be a prequel to Werna Creek.
Mr Townsend added he would be more than happy to sign copies of his book and share experiences with other writers.
Werna Creek is available as an e-book from zeus-publications.com or as a paperback from Mr Townsend 0455 130 462.
