Hills International Golf Academy students were a dominant force in the 2016 south-east district golf championships.
Wayne Wang, 17, Naoki Sekito, 18, Thaya Limpipolpuibul, 19, and Phuripon Namkang, 15, placed in tournaments including the men’s pennants, the south-east Queensland foursomes and men open as well as the colts junior championships.
Director of golf Tom Berndt said it was quite unbelievable that the school had that many winners in the district.
“We did win pennants last year, but it was good to win again,” he said.
“The athletes performed as we expected, however there was that pressure of holding the title going in.
“They handled themselves well and were very convincing in their games.
“Sometimes being dominant doesn't always bring the best out in their games, but they brought it.”
Berndt said they were all high quality players who wanted to make golf a career.
“It’s good for them to compete at this level (against men) and see how they compare in the stakes,” he said.
Wang came first in the open men’s championships finishing one under par.
“A challenge was playing the finals in the dark,” he said.
“We had to play by the light of the buggy.”
He also placed third in the junior colts championships.
Wang said it was great for Hills to come away with firsts and seconds in all the events.
Sekito was part of the winning foursome team with Limpipolpuibul.
He also placed second in the junior colts championship and third in the men’s championship.
Limpipolpuibul placed first in the colts category of the junior colts championship, placed second in the south-east Queensland men’s championship and was undefeated in pennants.
“We played on some great courses and it was really competitive across the board,” he said.
“These wins boost our confidence.”
Namkang placed first in the junior division of the junior colts championship.
“I was really excited to do so well in these competitions,” he said.
The golfers were thankful for the support of their coaches, trainers, and caddies and the organisers for of the championships.
