Intense storm cells dumped heavy rain and caused frequent lightning strikes from the Wide Bay area to Agnes Waters, closer to the central Queensland coast on Friday.
One man died when a tree fell on his caravan and two people were taken to hospital after lightning strikes in separate locations.
The first strike was at a Hervey Bay public amenities block, delivering an electrical shock to a teenage girl who was on a metal toilet during a fierce storm.
The Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) took the 17-year-old to the Hervey Bay Hospital for observation at about 7.30pm. She was later released.
A second lightning strike about an hour later involved a 45-year-old man who was hit at Urangan and taken to hospital in a semi-conscious state, a QAS spokesman said. A hospital spokesperson said the man was released at 9pm.
Several people relaxing at the Isis Central bowls club about 7.30pm were trapped by the first of two storm cells that passed through Childers and Bundaberg. They saw one lightning strike hit a flag pole and turned around to see that lightning had set a nearby paddock of large hay bails ablaze, near the Isis Central Sugar Mill.
"It was hair-raising," Madonna Ryan, wife of the bowls club president Billy Ryan, said.
"They were trapped because they were scared to go out. It was too dangerous."
The fire brigade used a dozer to stop the flames from spreading by separating the bails.
Earlier, a man was killed by a falling tree at Hervey Bay's Beachfront Caravan Park in Scarness.
The 68-year-old Narangba man was in his caravan when the tree fell, hitting him on the head.
The man suffered serious head injuries and had to be revived at the scene. He later died in hospital.
A spokeswoman from the Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed the man's death.
The Wide Bay area received falls of up to 166mm at Tairo, inland from Hervey Bay, which received 36mm, to Bundaberg where 132 mm of rain fell in the 24 hours to 9am.
"It's just so humid, there's so much water in the atmosphere that there is a possibility of more heavy rainfall, leading to localised flooding."
Monitoring storm cells starting to form in Mackay and Canarvon Gorge way.
"We have quite a bit of high winds in the upper atmosphere at the moment that the rain tends to bring down to the surface and that's where we run into problems," a bureau spokesman said.
