A YEAR of lifting heavy farm machinery, rocks and logs in her backyard paid off for Gleneagle woman Karma Houston when she won her first national strong woman competition on Saturday.

Houston, 24, won the light weight division of the International Strength Federation Strongman/ Strongwoman Nationals at the Veresdale Hotel.
She edged out in front to beat seasoned competitor and fellow local Simone Johnson of Veresdale Scrub in the lightweight division.
Veresdale Scrub man and event organiser William Johnson came third in the men’s masters division.
Dave Napper of Brisbane won the men’s open division and Ash Peni of Browns Plains won the women’s open division.
Johnson said about 200 spectators turned out to watch the 37 competitors.
