After gathering for a seminar on the Ukrainian conflict in May, the Munruben Church of Christ community took action, raising approximately $10 thousand to pay for a family of refugees' air fares.
Maxim fled Kherson Oblast in Ukraine's south with his wife Snezhana, their kids and his mother after Russian troops invaded and occupied the region.
Maxim's father is still in Ukraine, although he has been granted a visa to leave the country and will join the family soon.
The family had been in contact with their relatives in Australia, Zhenia and Anton, who brought their plight to the attention of the church.
The Ukrainian father said the act of generosity was completely unexpected, and that his first impressions of Australian life were positive.
"We're ecstatic," Maxim said.
"In 32 years of life, I have never met people like this, who would give that sum of money to a family. You would never find this in Ukraine or Europe.
"Australia is a wonderful country."
The generosity did not stop there.
As none of Maxim's immediate family can speak English fluently, six members of the church community have volunteered their time to learn how to teach them English as a second language.
Church Elder Roger Lewis said the church felt it had a duty to act.
"When people are in need, you don't procrastinate. You act," Mr Lewis said.
"That's what Christianity is about. Helping your brothers and sisters."
Ukrainian migrant Lena McInnes, whose talk on the issue spurred the church community into action, said she was astounded by the small church's generosity.
"It's so wonderful to have been a part of this and see how the family has been blessed by the church," Mrs McInnes said.
"I'm just blown away."
Although he had have received a warm welcome, Maxim said it was a painful experience leaving his old life behind but he was optimistic of things to come.
"It's an unexplainable feeling," he said.
"You can only understand it if you go through it yourself. We had to leave everything we had built up over the last seven years.
"What's important is our lives have been saved. Everything else can be regained here."
The family is still rebuilding their life in Australia, and Munruben Church of Christ is asking for donations of household items like furniture and bedding. If you can help, contact Roger Lewis on 0417 195 249.
