SOME servos at Jimboomba and Beaudesert are offering fuel at well below the national average, as RACQ warns unleaded petrol is likely to hit record highs at Brisbane and Gold Coast in coming days.
National unleaded petrol prices rose a further 6.9 per cent last week to 160.7 cents per litre, while over the weekend Brent crude oil briefly hit $US85 a barrel for the first time since 2018.
Commonwealth Securities chief economist Craig James said people filling up a 70 litre car today were paying $56 more than they were 18 months ago when prices dropped amid the pandemic.
Only 10 days ago RACQ were calling for motorists to fill up while unleaded prices remained low, with 150 cents being offered as the price cycle bottomed out.
But prices are now topping $1.83 per litre in the city centres, including nearby Redlands and in Logan suburbs like Greenbank, Yarrabilba and Flagstone.
Jimboomba Mobil at Cusack Lane was offering unleaded at 149.7 cents per litre on Monday, which was among the cheapest fuel on offer across most of Logan.
Beaudesert's petrol stations were also on the cheaper end of the scale, with 153.9 cents per litre available at two servos on Brisbane Street.
RACQ spokeswoman Renee Smith said the average monthly cost of unleaded in Brisbane soared to an all time high in September.
"Staggeringly, when reviewing the monthly average, Brisbane drivers were charged up to 17cpl more at the bowser than motorists in other cities last month," she said.
"We saw records smashed in September, with Brisbane drivers paying a daily average of 173.4 cents per litre at one stage, and that's resulted in the monthly average also hitting a record."
Ms Smith said it was important for motorists to do their research before hitting the road, such as accessing real-time information on fuel apps.
"With the power at your fingertips you can avoid wasting time driving around in search of a good deal and stop getting caught out paying more than you should at the pump," she said.
