WORK on the intersection at Cedar Vale and Cedar Grove Roads will start soon, including a speed limit cut from 100km/hr to 80km/hr.
It forms part of the Transport Department's Mount Lindesay Highway Jimboomba to Beaudesert upgrade.
Highway intersections at Cedar Vale Road, Round Ridge Road, Millstream Road, and Spring Street have been earmarked for safety improvements.
Intersections will be upgraded by building dedicated turning lanes, installing traffic signals and street lighting, removing hazards and installing safety barriers.
In Parliament, Scenic Rim MP Jon Krause urged the Roads Minister Mark Bailey to get behind sensible design rules when it came to main roads.
He wants "turn left at any time with care" lanes instead of a traffic light installed at the intersection.
"They (TMR) are putting signals in there. Some people like that project, others are not so in favour of it," he said.
"If they are not put in, there will be a red light just for one car. That does not make sense on Cedar Grove and Cedarvale roads," he said.
"I have spoken to TMR about it. They say that it is not possible to have 'turn left at any time with care' lanes at that intersection. That is ridiculous."
Safety is always our number one priority with these kinds of projects
- Mark Bailey
Transport Minister Mark Bailey said Mr Krause had been briefed on the road works.
"The safety guidelines that are followed when designing intersection upgrades recommend against installing slip lanes.
"The reason for that is to reduce the likelihood of crashes at the intersection, including with pedestrians who might be crossing," he said.
The reason the government was funding $14.4 million worth of intersection upgrades on the Mount Lindesay Highway was because those intersections were getting busier.
"That includes the Cedar Vale Road/Cedar Grove Road intersection, which is why it is part of that project."
Mr Bailey said the upgrade would include the speed limit on the intersection approach being reduced from 100km/h to 80km/h.
"Safety is always our number one priority with these kinds of projects, and I'm frankly surprised Mr Krause is questioning that," he said.
Mr Bailey said the upgrade to the intersection was due to start in the second half of the year.
