Meanwhile, in Moreton Bay, squid baits are effective as there are plenty of tiger squid.
The shallow reefs around the bay islands are also fishing well while artificial reefs are starting to see some good catches.
Most anglers have their favourite marks, and it can be challenging to find a bit of structure if you arrive after the dedicated anglers are already anchored on their spots. A friend of mine used to have a lot of success drifting a bit wide off the main boat anchoring spots at Harry Atkinson reef.
His theory was that the activity would cause the fish to move off to a quieter place to feed and it did seem to work because he caught many good fish away from the hectic fishing areas.
Tusk fish and sweetlip are also biting near Peel Island and at the artificial reefs off Peel. The warmer water has brought cod on and several lucky anglers have caught a good feed.
These fish do not usually put up much of a fight but occasionally the bigger specimens can be a handful to get into the boat. They are delicious.
Water temperatures are rising. I recorded a water temperature of 23 degrees on Saturday and last weekend it was 20 degrees. Our sea temperature can change at this time of the year. Although by next month it should be consistently warm.
Undersized grassie sweetlip were in plague proportions and I had to move off the shallow reef around Coochiemudlo Island to try and find bigger fish.
I caught a couple of catfish on Saturday and one was the biggest catfish I have ever caught.
I was fishing from my kayak, and the catfish took me for a ride until it tired out enough for me to land it. My friend also caught his first bull shark of the season.
The charter boats who managed to find a window in the windy conditions to fish offshore caught good mixed bags of fish. Cobia, dolphin fish, tusk fish, snapper and sweetlip were brought onboard.
Our junior angler of the week is 6-year-old Evie Parker who fished with her dad, Andrew, from Coochiemudlo Island and caught a bream. Well done, Evie that is a good size fixh.
