DESPITE soggy conditions, the Jimboomba Redbacks under 17s defeated Tweed Coolangatta in a great show of resilience on the weekend.
Playing at Coolangatta with 16 players against 19, the Redbacks kept control of the game for most of the night, but wet weather made it hard to score goals.
The girls fought their hardest to hold on to the lead and won 4-6-30 to 2-2-14.
Stand out players included Jesica Pang, Monet Broughton-Ferris, Chloe Martin and Jesica Draper.
Piling on the defensive pressure in the back line Savanna, Tekitah and Ashleigh got plenty of the ball and and held their forwards accountable.
Player of the match went to Tekitah for her constant attack and being composed with ball in hand.
The 16.5s recorded their first win of the season in a 22 point victory against Springwood.
After slow starts in their first two games, the team came out firing and set up the win with an impressive first quarter.
Captain Ty Porter set the example, attacking the ball with speed and ferocity, Ryliegh Utting was hard at work in every contest and Sam Windsor thrust the ball into attack and scored an early goal.
Zach Bond also found plenty of touches.
At half time they were in front by 36 points, having kept Springwood from scoring a goal.
Springwood came out fighting in the second half but strong pressure from Vinnie Byrne, Bert Jarrett, Bernard Gaynor and Cameron Doyle ensured that the challenge was met.
Lachlan Walsh-Woodman and Matt Gillham kept the run up through the middle of the ground.
The final score was 6-9-45 to 3-5-23.
The under 14.5s had a dominant win 17-15-117 to 0-1-1 over Beenleigh, despite player injuries.
Coach Geno Shuttleworth said it was great to watch the transition from the back line to the forward line.
"Player of the match Seth Dickerson was awesome in the back line during the first half, before smashing the ball forward from the midfield in the second half," he said.
"(There was) strong evidence all day of the team playing as a team, sharing the ball and looking up for players who were on the lead."
Despite fighting hard, the under 12.5s lost to Park Ridge 1-0-6 to 11-12-78.
Coach Michael Young said Park Ridge had pushed harder to be first to the ball and capitalised on this to lead by five goals at half time.
"There were a lot of positives (for the Redbacks) with a number of players making progress with their games," he said.
Playing his 100th game, James Pottinger kicked the team's only goal.
The senior men's team used their home field advantage to defeat the Mayne Tigers 4-8-32 to 4-3-27.
The 13.5s defeated Ormeau 5-14-44 to 0-1-1.
The under 11.5s lost to Park Ridge 4-7-31 to 7-10-52 and the 15.5s lost to Broadbeach Blue 0-0-00 to 14-21-105.
The senior women and masters teams had a bye.
Club president Tom Vidoni said the Redbacks' spirit had shone through during difficult times.
"I would like to say thank you to all of our amazing players, parents & volunteers for another fantastic weekend of football," he said.
"Remember to come and cheer on the Jimboomba Redbacks again next weekend."
He wished injured players Kobie and Jai a speedy recovery.
