Kerbside collection in Logan will continue for at least the next year, despite Brisbane revealing it would scrap its bulky waste clean-up program in a money-saving move.
Logan City Council announced during its Wednesday meeting that the program, which allows residents to dispose of bulky household items and green waste, would happen again later this year.
It comes after council awarded a new city-wide waste collection contract to Cleanaway Waste Management Limited, commencing on July 1, 2021.
The contract includes a number of kerbside bulky waste clean-up service options for council to consider.
Brisbane City Council revealed it would scrap its program for two years in its annual budget, a move it said would save $13 million.
Brisbane then said it would consider a petition calling for the return of the program, after detractors said it could lead to an increase in illegal dumping.
Logan's City Planning, Economic Development and Environment Committee chair Jon Raven said the service would stay in the city for at least another year.
"We want to reassure the community that, whatever happens in the future, for the next year we are making sure the kerbside clean-up, which is one of the most loved services our council provides, stays exactly the way it is," he said.
"We were not going to make the mistake that Brisbane City Council made by taking away a loved service.
"While Brisbane City Council is trying to be Bris-better, Logan is already there."
Division 9 councillor Scott Bannan said he was pleased the scheme would continue for constituents.
"It's by no means perfect - it can be unsightly - but when it comes to waste disposal, it's hard to make it perfect," Cr Bannan said.
"The last thing we would want to do is upset the ratepayers - they are the ones paying for it."
The scheme is due to begin later this month in Eagleby.
Collectors will be in Browns Plains, Regents Park and Heritage Park from November 2 to13.
In January 2021, Munruben, Park Ridge South, North Maclean, South Maclean, Greenbank and New Beith residents can put out their rubbish for collection.
The scheme comes to Jimboomba, Riverbend, Glenlogan, Flagstone, Veresdale Scrub, Veresdale, Cedar Vale, Mundoolun, Cedar Grove and Woodhill in February, when it also hits Stockleigh, Logan Reserve, Tamborine, Cedar Creek, Logan Village, Buccan, Chambers Flat, Yarrabilba and Kairabar.
