LOGAN City Council is set to change its Ekka public holiday date to bring it in line with Brisbane's, in a move mayor Darren Power said would support local parents.
Council has written to the state government asking to change the date from Monday, August 10 to Friday, August 14.
It follows government approval for Brisbane City Council to move their Wednesday holiday to the Friday.
In announcing the news at today's council meeting, Cr Power said parents of Logan children would welcome the date change.
"The main reason people why wanted to change the date was because people work in Brisbane and they had a different holiday to their children schooling in Logan," Cr Power said.
Cr Power said councillors were unanimous in their support of consulting the community on the date change.
"During the process that was on Facebook, there was a lot of consultation that took place," he said.
"In fact it was probably the most well read social media event that occurred, certainly on my Facebook."
He said social media users agreed the date should be changed.
"There was a flavour of support to change the day to the Friday," Cr Power said.
Cr Power said between 80 and 90 per cent of responders supported the change.
He said council hoped to get a decision from the state government in the near future.
Jimboomba readers were divided in their opinion of the best day to hold the Ekka public holiday this year.
An online poll conducted by the Jimboomba Times revealed that 51 per cent were in favour of changing to the Friday, while 48 per cent would rather see the holiday kept on the Monday.
One Facebook user said councils should have a uniformed approach.
"All regions that mark the Ekka holiday should observe it on the same day," Paul Taylor wrote.
"If larger capital cities can do it, surely Brisbane, in a capital city context, can as well."
Nathan Owens-Place wrote that he agreed with moving it.
"We're a family of four," he said.
"Two work in Brisbane, two work/school in Logan. It gives us the chance to get away as a family."
The Redlands' holiday has remained in its usual Monday slot, as has Scenic Rim Council's.
