A quick-thinking rubbish truck driver saved his vehicle by dumping the load when it caught fire at Flagstone yesterday.
The JJ Richards employee dumped the load at Driver Crescent about 8am when the fire, thought to have been sparked by a crushed lithium battery in a computer in the compactor, started.
One resident described hearing a series of bangs before the fire broke out.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services sent one crew to the scene to contain the fire, measuring about four square metres, on the road.
A spokeswoman said they had contained it by 8.05am and extinguished the fire shortly after.
The crew had left the scene by 8.35am.
The incident follows another which happened on a recycling run at Browns Plains on February 21.
A blackened battery was found among the burn recycling in the first case. The cause of the Flagstone fire was still being investigated.
Council said JJ Richards' drivers followed safety procedures in both incidents, and urged residents not to put batteries into rubbish or recycling bins.
"Residents are encouraged to recycle batteries free of charge at one of council's five waste transfer stations: Browns Plains, Greenbank, Logan Village, Carbrook and Beenleigh," a council spokesman said.
