SINCE he was an apprentice, Ben Shepherd knew he wanted to work for himself.

He fulfilled that dream in December, 2017 when Ben started Shepherd Industries.

"It is definitely not easy but the rewards are worth it," Ben, who is the director of Shepherd Industries, said.

"We offer all aspects of electrical work.

"Our most common request is for LED lighting upgrades, ceiling fan replacements, switchboard upgrades and generator changeover switches.

"We can also now offer a free electrical health check with every job booked in to ensure your house and family is safe."

While Ben is in the field his wife Nicole runs the office.

It was family reasons that made Ben decide to start Shepherd Industries.

"My family and I moved from Mackay to Brisbane to be closer to all our relatives," Ben said.

"I was working in the mines up there, so a lot of time was spent away from home.

"Starting my own business was a way I could spend more time with my wife and children."

An advantage of being a small company is Ben can give clients the personalised service they expect.

"We stand by our products and workmanship," he said.

"Supporting local businesses like ourselves is vital for our community to grow.

"We sponsor the local Jimboomba Gymnastics and donate to the ambulance, police and fire services."

Clients can find special deals from Shepherd Industries on their Facebook page.

"We also have a website, which outlines what services we offer, our location and contact details.

"We have tried to adapt to the ever evolving online world by continually updating our website, advertising ... and Instagram."

Over the next three to five years, Ben wants to expand his business in the local area and employ local people to help him succeed.

Ben said he and Nicole realised many residents were doing it tough, especially in the time of the coronavirus pandemic.

"So for every job for the the month of April, we will offer a 15 per cent discount to anyone that books a job in and mentions this advertisement," Ben said.
