A daily skincare routine is a great way to take care of your complexion. But with so many products and options out there, where do you start?
A skincare routine is a consistent, customised routine for cleaning and treating the skin for optimal health, using a proven skincare system, that is regularly assessed by a dermal specialist.
Plastic surgeon and skincare specialist Dr Anh Nguyen said it was important to have a skincare routine to deliver results and ensure skin is in optimal health.
"It is especially important if you are wanting to embark on a course of treatment, as it will maximise results from any treatment," she said.
"Having an established skin care routine is like prepping the soil ready for planting. It will help to fight off the signs of ageing and will complement more intensive treatments that a person may be investing in, providing longer lasting results."
So what steps should be included in any good routine?
"Ideally a skin care routine will include a good cleanser to rid the skin of any buildup and prep for your more active skin care products," Dr Nguyen said.
"A good system will include both a day routine and night routine, as the skin goes through different phases and repairs differently.
"The steps will need to be customised to your specific needs and goals, which should only be assessed by a specialist dermal therapist."
Your skin type and age will make a huge difference to the kinds of products you should use.
"From the age of 30 we start to decrease our collagen production," Dr Nguyen said. "This leads over time, to a decrease in skin elasticity - sagging skin. Genetics, hormonal changes, environmental and occupational exposures all have an impact on how we age. The skin care routine that is recommended for you will take all these factors into consideration."
Dr Nguyen suggested seeing a dermal therapist or clinician with specific training in assessing and treating the skin. "Preferably in a clinic where they have access to a plastic surgeon, to ensure that any specific issues or conditions can have a thorough assessment if required," she said.
For particular skin conditions like acne, rosacea or eczema, it is even more important to have skin properly assessed before embarking on a particular routine.
"This [assessment] should also include questions around diet, exercise and general health," Dr Nguyen said.
