Transport and Main Roads will be undertaking road improvement works on the Mount Lindesay Highway on a 500-metre section at Gould Hill Road, Gleneagle, starting from mid January.
Scenic Rim MP Jon Krause said the condition of the Mount Lindesay Highway was one of the most common concerns residents brought to his attention in the Beaudesert District.
"The Mount Lindesay Highway is a hot topic - it's neglected in so many parts and motorists in the Scenic Rim deserve better road infrastructure to keep them safe," he said.
"There are parts of the highway in worse condition than at Gould Hill Road.
"However, it is good to see that some progress is being made at least on one section of the Mount Lindsay Highway.
"When it comes to the road south of Beaudesert, the notoriously dangerous Laravale section is in the process of being improved after my lobbying on behalf of locals."
Mr Krause said it was a relief to see the work underway on one section of the Mount Lindesay Highway but more needed to be done to improve the road from Jimboomba to the New South Wales border to ensure the safety of motorists.
Acting Transport and Main Roads minister Mark Bailey said the roadworks were part of the state government's $100 million commitment to the Mount Lindesay Highway and crews would this month start work on upgrading the highway at Gould Hill Road, Gleneagle.
"These works will include overhauling the existing road and replacing it with new pavement, plus drainage upgrades and linemarking," he said.
"This financial year, we've secured $54.4 million to upgrade key sections of the Mount Lindesay Highway and its arterial roads, including a 1.3 kilometre stretch at Laravale.
"That builds on the $27.5 million Beaudesert bypass and $2 million Millstream Road intersection upgrade south of Jimboomba, which we delivered, plus regular maintenance carried out by RoadTek crews.
"Jon Krause's federal LNP colleagues have even recognised the Palaszczuk Labor government's heavy lifting on the highway, finally unlocking another $30 million for the highway as part of a $1.9 billion infrastructure deal, which we secured last year."
Mr Krause applauded the state government for taking action following the start of a major upgrade on the Laravale section of the highway, which he says happened after his lobbying on behalf of locals.
Mr Bailey argued that the LNP had nothing to do with the decision to fix the road.
"It's the Palaszczuk government that has done the heavy lifting on the Mt Lindesay Highway since 2015 after the LNP and Jon Krause cut the state's roads budget by more than half-a-billion dollars," he said.
Mr Krause said he had been advised the project was expected to be finished by mid-February, weather permitting with night works to be done between 7pm and 5am and changed traffic conditions in place.
