BUSHLAND maintenance, river health and koala conservation were among the top spends for Logan City Council's environmental levy in 2018/19.
More than $8.8 million collected through council rates was spent on environmental projects in the last financial year.
About $3.2 million was put towards maintaining bushland and the region's 15 BushCare groups.
The second largest spend was $2.75 million on the Logan and Albert River Visions, the Slacks Creek Recovery Plan, koala conservation and flying fox management.
Logan's waterways have long been a point of concern for residents and environmentalists, with the Logan River scoring a C- or below since 2015. Issues raised in past assessments have included high pollutant loads and poor riverside vegetation.
On the agenda for the council's river plans is the rehabilitation of riverside vegetation and encouragement of property owners to follow good rural land management practices.
$1 million was allocated for conservation and environmental programs like the Logan Eco Action Festival, EnviroGrants and engagement with rural landholders.
Smaller amounts were spent on environmental park enhancement and weed control.
More than 7862 native plants were established in 5200 hectares of environmentally significant land, including 80 Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vines, the main food source for the larvae of its vulnerable namesake.
Twenty-five nest-boxes installed at Logan Village and Greenbank were added to 237 nest boxes already in operation across Logan.
The Logan Wildlife Ambulance, delivered by RSPCA Queensland and Logan City Council, conducted 3000 animal rescues in 2018/19, the majority of which were birds. About 26 per cent were rehabilitated and released back into the wild.
RSPCA volunteer ambulance co-ordinator Adrianne Jamieson of the RSPCA said some of the most common scenarios animal rescuers saw in Logan were wildlife attacked by domestic animals or hit by cars.
Logan City Council director of strategy and sustainability David Hansen said the annual environmental levy report reflected the high priority council placed on the environment.
"Environmental levy funds are helping to safeguard our city's biodiversity and enhance our green corridors," he said.
"Levy-funded projects also protect local wildlife and threatened species and ensure our waterways are healthy.
"Many of council's environmental programs are ongoing which will ensure our natural environments are protected and enhanced for future generations."
The environmental levy was first introduced in 1991.
