DRONES could be delivering light groceries and coffee to Marsden and Crestmead residents in a matter of months.
Global technology company Alphabet's air delivery service, Wing, plans to lodge a development application with Logan City Council to modify its Berrinba delivery facility and permanently service the Logan area.
Wing will also seek approvals from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and department of Infrastructure, Transport, Cities and Regional Development in coming weeks.
The proposed delivery service will initially be available to a small group of eligible homes in Crestmead and Marsden as part of its Early Flyer program with plans to expand its customer base over time.
Wing currently operates its drone delivery service in Canberra suburbs including Crace, Franklin and Lamerston.
Drones are capable of delivering 1.5kg of items to homes within a 10km distance.
Australian head of operation Terrance Bouldin-Johnson said the company was looking forward to launching the first air delivery service in south-east Queensland.
"Queensland has staked out a leadership position in the advancement of drone technology and some of the most significant drone developments in the world are happening here," he said.
"Wing allows customers to order a range of items such as fresh bread, coffee or food items on our mobile app, and have them delivered directly to their homes by drone in minutes."
Wing will partner with Logan businesses to give customers the opportunity to have their items via drones.
The company will not charge a delivery fee during the early stage of the process.
Queensland Innovation Minister Kate Jones said the air delivery service would create more jobs for drone pilots in Queensland.
"We are already leading the way in drone technology across a number of industries, including defence, agriculture, mining and manufacturing," she said.
"Wing has the potential to shift the gear again in the use of drone technology for transportation by increasing access to goods, easing traffic congestion and helping to reduce carbon dioxide emissions."
Logan City Council director of strategy and sustainability David Hansen said Wing had shown they were willing to engage with the Logan community.
"Council has launched an array of smart strategies and programs designed at empowering entrepreneurs, innovators and businesses to create economic and social benefits for the community," he said.
"Council welcomes the news that Wing could soon establish their operation here and we're looking forward to working with them through the development application and community engagement processes."
