LOGAN City Council has granted Clutha Creek Quarry a 10-year extension to operate at Tamborine until 2041.
Quarry owner Clutha Creek Pastoral have mined sand on the site since 1983 and requested the council extend their licence to operate due to the surplus amount of sand expected by 2031.
The company expects to yield 12 million and 15 million tonnes of sand to be extracted over 60 to 75 years.
Sand mined from the site is used to manufacture concrete and asphalt to support the building and construction industry.
Clutha Creek Pastoral initially applied to completely remove the condition to operate until 2031 but altered the application after development assessment officers informed them that was outside the boundaries of a minor change application.
The quarry is located within a state government declared Key Resource Area, which protects the sand on site from "incompatible development".
Interim administrator of Logan City Council Tamara O'Shea approved the extension during the City Planning and Economic Development committee meeting this month.
Ms O'Shea said the application was consistent with the Beaudesert Planning Scheme 2007 which was the scheme in effect when approval was first granted.
"I am satisfied that council officers have undertaken a balnced assessment of the proposed development," she said.
"All impacts will continue to be managed appropriately in accordance with the current approval conditions, which provide for the effective ongoing management of the quarry's operations."
The Jimboomba Times attempted to reach the Clutha Creek Quarry for further comment.
